Dee Gay

Before becoming helplessly hooked on clay, I received my degree in Commercial Art and worked as a graphic designer for over 25 years. I have always admired ceramic artists and enjoyed collecting pottery and sculpture. In 2003, I decided to enroll in a ceramics class to learn more about the medium. I became captivated by clay immediately and am still infatuated with the process.

In creating my work, I start with an idea and begin sketching. The design stage is actually my favorite part of the process. Although I occasionally throw and alter a piece, I am mainly a hand builder. I enjoy finding objects to use as molds and putting them together to form a unique piece. Textures are important in my designs and I revel in exploring new options for creating an interesting surface. My work is often whimsical and has been described repeatedly as “Alice in Wonderland-ish”.

Although I have been working in clay since 2003, I still consider myself a hobbyist. I do it because it fulfills a need to create and produce…and because it is so much fun.
